Dr. Maria José Alonso Fernández will receive the XVII Burdinola Research Award

-The studies that she carries out on the subject of the award in relation to Advances in personalized and regenerative biomedicine in the field of Nanotechnology are excellent.

-Her work is carried out at the Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases of the University of Santiago de Compostela (CIMUS) and she directs a research group in Nanomedicine that has 25 people. She is linked to the Faculty of Pharmacy where she exercises her teaching activity and to the FIDIS research center associated with Hospital Clínico Universitario.

Dr. Maria José Alonso has been recognized by the jury of the XVII Burdinola Research Award as the recipient of this award, which in this edition has wanted to distinguish the most outstanding work in the field of personalized and regenerative biomedicine in relation to nanomaterials and nanoparticles .

Professor Alonso's laboratory was a pioneer in Spain in the field of Nanomedicine (1990). Her orientation, with a clearly translational perspective, has been towards the development of therapies based on biological drugs, particularly in the field of personalized and regenerative medicine. In this field, she has developed highly innovative drug delivery nanosystems (22 patent families) capable of directing associated drugs, in a personalized way, to different population segments, as well as designing nanostructures that are fundamental in tissue engineering.

The trajectory of Dr. Alonso is excellent, having reached the 9th position in the world ranking of the "Times Higher Education" 2010 in the area of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Likewise, in the last decade it has occupied the first place in the Spanish ranking that measures the impact of scientific work in the area of Pharmacology (H index = 90;> 27,000 citations). This year she has been included in the “Power List 2020” of the most influential researchers in the world in the biopharmaceutical field (The Medicine Maker, 2020). She is also an academic at 5 Academies, including the United States Academy of Medicine.

Support research

An activity in direct contact with the research teams and a special sensitivity to the social environment, made Burdinola germinate the idea of creating an award that, precisely, would contribute to the recognition, appreciation and encouragement of the scientific community. This purpose materialized in 1994 with the launch of the first Burdinola Research Award. Since then, the list of winners has grown with great names in Spanish scientific activity.

Evaluate the applications
Throughout these years, another of the hallmarks of the award has been the high scientific and business level of the members of the jury.

In this seventeenth edition, seven experts have evaluated the different candidatures and chosen, based on their merits, the winner among all of them. The jury has been chaired by Doctor Joseba Pineda, dean of the UPV / EHU Faculty of Medicine and Nursing, being the secretary the Director of the Euskoiker University-Business Foundation, Doctor Alfonso Hernández. The committee has also had five members: Dr. Laura Lechuga, Dr. Rosa Hernández, Dr. Ramón Colomer, Dr. Guillermo Zalba and Don Mikel Martínez, General Director of Burdinola, the latter with voice but without vote.

In its decision, the jury also wanted to highlight the high level of quality of all the applications submitted in this seventeenth call for the Burdinola Research Award
