MARIA JOSÉ ALONSO RECEIVES THE BURDINOLA RESEARCH AWARD in its 17th edition. - The event was chaired by the Rector Magnificent of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Mr. Antonio López Díaz. -The award recognizes his work on Advances in personalized and regenerative biomedicine in the field of Nanotechnology In the auditorium of the University of Santiago de Compostela, the seventeenth edition of the Burdinola Research Award was presented to Dr. Maria José Alonso, in an act chaired by the Magnificent Rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Mr. Antonio López Díaz.
The award recognizes the outstanding research work in the field of pharmaceutical nanotechnology, and specifically in the advances in personalized and regenerative medicine that Dr. Maria José Alonso directs together with a research group that has approximately 25 people at the Center of Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases of the University of Santiago de Compostela (CIMUS). At the event, the recognition diploma and the financial prize of 15,000 euros were awarded.
The event was attended by the Rector Magnífico of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Mr. Antonio López Díaz; Ernesto González, Vice-rector for teaching staff; Jacobo Limeres, Vice-Rector for Quality; Maria Paz García, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Santiago; Mrs. Senén Barro, CITIUS Director, who has also presented the winner's gloss; the President of the Euskoiker University-Business Foundation and secretary of the award, Mr. Alfonso Hernández; the President of the Jury, Mr. Joseba Pineda; Mr. Antonio Fernández-Campa, Manager of the Galician health knowledge agency; Ms. Gonzalo Trenor, Territorial Delegate of the Xunta de Galicia and the Director General of Burdinola Mr. Mikel Martínez, who has delivered the award.
A large part of the scientific and university community of the city has gathered in the event, with an outstanding attendance of professionals from the different departments of the University of Santiago de Compostela.
During it, the Director General of Burdinola has dedicated part of his speech to highlighting the future value of research activity to move towards a progressive and more competitive society, highlighting the example of the new winner of the Burdinola Research Award.
The awarded
Dr. Maria José Alonso has a Degree in Pharmacy from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), with a Master's Degree in Pharmacy (USC 1981) and a Ph.D. in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology (USC 1985). In 1987 she obtained the post of tenured professor and since 1998 she is Professor of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at USC. In addition, she has worked at the University of Paris South (1986-1987), the University of Angers (1989) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1991-1992).
Upon her return to Spain, she created the first laboratory in the country in the field of pharmaceutical nanotechnology. Since then, she has been the coordinator of multiple consortia and principal investigator for numerous cooperative projects funded by the World Health Organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the European Commission.
With her research, she has promoted the development of targeted delivery systems for drugs and vaccines. Her work on personalized therapies for the treatment of cancer, the treatment of autoimmune diseases and also in the development of vaccines stands out.
The award
An activity in direct contact with the research teams and a special sensitivity to the social environment, made the Burdinola company germinate the idea of ​​creating an award that would contribute to the recognition, appreciation and encouragement of the scientific community. This purpose materialized in 1993 with the launch of the first Burdinola Research Award. Since then, the list of winners has grown with illustrious names from Spanish scientific activity.
