The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) is a multidisciplinary centre that promotes academic research and postgraduate education in the environmental sciences. Nowadays it lodges approximately 200 researchers in environmental sciences.

The building consists mainly of offices and laboratories which, given their activities, tend to generate heat. The new building, singular in Catalonia for the criteria of sustainability, controls the temperature by means of a " exterior skin ", reduces the energy consumption up to 62 % and the water consumption up to 90 % with regard to a conventional building. The building's design aims to make use of this heat in the winter and disperse it during the summer through natural ventilation.

The building has a surface of approximately 9.400 square meters distributed in 6 plants, and Burdinola was the responsible of the supply and installation of the equipment for 16 laboratories. The building has the qualification LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) GOLD granted by the USBGC (US Green Building Council) with a punctuation of 73 points, a certification of environmental commitment with international standards.
